🎯 Problem Statement (JTBD)
"When I am struggling with intense emotions that I can't share with friends or family, I want to access a neutral, private space to talk freely, so I can feel validated and heard without worrying about the social consequences."
This simple idea emerged during research on mental health trends and the rising use of anonymous platforms (like Whisper or Reddit confessions). Early sketches of Palphone looked similar to regular messaging apps.
We had to ask: What makes someone want to talk anonymously?
And more importantly: What makes them feel safe enough to open up?
🌀 The Double Diamond… in Reverse
Unlike the traditional Double Diamond approach (Discover → Define → Develop → Deliver), Palphone evolved using a reverse method:
Started with a clear solution hypothesis
Validated through real-world testing
Discovered deeper user needs and pain points
Redefined the problem with emotional insight
This approach allowed us to pivot from “just another chat app” to a mood-sensitive emotional sanctuary.

✨ UX Solutions
User Feedback (Store Reviews): "I met an amazing person and we talked for 2 hours, then my app crashed and I lost them forever. I'm deleting the app."
The Solution: Added a "Add Friend" bridge. To maintain our "No Trace" value, this list remains anonymous and provides a "Kill Switch" (Delete = Permanent Disappearance for both).
KPI to track: Day-7 Retention.
User Feedback (Store Reviews):
It just stays on 'Connecting' forever.
No one is online. Waste of time."
The Solution: Implemented a Global Time feature and suggesting users the best time to find a match in their specific language.
KPI to track: Time to Value (TTV).
User Feedback (Store Reviews): "I want to talk about my secrets, but there's no way to show that I'm looking for a deep talk."
The Solution: Redesigned the home screen to replace generic icons with high-intent emotional characters (Confession, Bored, Sad, Lonely).
KPI to track: Average Conversation Duration (ACD).
User Feedback (Store Reviews): "Too many creepy guys. Not a safe space."
The Data Trigger (Firebase): We segmented our user base by gender. We found that female users had a 90% "Skip" rate within the first 15 seconds of a match, indicating they were being bombarded with inappropriate content or "hunters."
The Solution: Integrated a Report & Flag function. In the backend, we used it to flag users who received more than 3 reports in 1 hour.
KPI to track: Female User Churn Rate.
📈 Impact & Results
Reduced "Search-to-Exit" rate by 38% by nudging users toward high-density time slots.
Boosted Day-7 retention by 15% by creating a reason for users to return to a specific human connection.
Decreased female user churn by 28% by actively "shadow-filtering" reported accounts out of the matching pool.

💡 Reflections
By approaching the reverse Double Diamond, we let real users teach us what the true problem was.
Additional observations:
Sometimes we have to build first and learn after
Starting with a working product helped us uncover real user needs faster than upfront research alone
Letting users guide the direction made Palphone more human, relatable, and impactful.
Designing for emotions required constant listening, small iterations, and thoughtful details
📌 What I’d Do Differently
Involve mental health professionals to build smarter, more empathetic features
Design a web version to broaden accessibility
